A film is often made specifically for a star. The film industry calls such film as star vehicles. In this case, a film is designed and made by utilizing the popularity of a certain star, as well as considering his or her unique characteristics. If such is the case, we can assume that a group of star vehicle films carry within themselves a number of specific characteristics that are associated with the star in question. Those characteristics are able to build audience’s expectation, the way genre conventions also do. Is it safe to assume that star vehicles operate like a film genre? Through a literature study about the concept of genre and stardom within film studies, this article explores how exactly those two concepts are related, especially in the context of the mainstream com-mercial film industry.
